The role of the Harbour Commissioners is primarily as the Navigational Authority regulating marine operations within Coleraine Harbour from the Barmouth to the Millennium footbridge. It has an environmental duty to conserve and facilitate the safe use of the Harbour and its resources. In addition it has the responsibility of implementing the Port Marine Safety Code. Coleraine Harbour Commissioners as the Competent Harbour Authority and duty holder under the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), recognise a responsibility to publicly report on PMSC performance.

COLERAINE HARBOUR–Coleraine Harbour is situated on the River Bann. Latitude 55°08’N, Longitude 06°40’W.

The river entrance is maintained at 3·5m LWOST but is subject to silting. Heavy swell may prohibit entry and exit. Prevailing winds westerly. Tidal rise at springs 1·9m and at neaps 0·9m. Maximum size vessel 88m LOA 12·5m Beam 3·8m Draft. Draft restrictions may apply. The port is situated 8km inland from the Barmouth.

Pilotage is compulsory for commercial vessels. River Bann pilots board from the pilot cutter “Ulidia’’ (VHF 12). Fair weather anchorage just west of pilot boarding station. Anchorage also Lough Foyle.

The port has three quays 217m in length and has two transit sheds totalling 1,912 square metres. One crane with a max-lift of 18-tonne is available for general bulk cargoes. Labour is normally available from 0800 to 1700 Monday to Thursday and 0800 to 1600 on a Friday. Outside these hours and on bank holidays labour may be available at overtime rates. Mooring is also available for summer and winter or on an annual basis.
