Celebrating Community and Accessibility: Vice Chairman Richard Attends Garden Party at Hillsborough Castle

Coleraine Harbour Commissioners are proud to share that our Vice Chairman, Richard, recently attended the Secretary of State’s Garden Party at Hillsborough Castle. Accompanied by his partner Lee, Richard enjoyed an afternoon of wonderful hospitality while meeting people from across Northern Ireland who have been recognised for their public and voluntary service.

A highlight of the event was Richard being personally introduced by the Lord-Lieutenant of Co Londonderry to HRH The Princess Royal. During their conversation, Richard shared insights into his voluntary work with Sea2it, Coleraine Harbour Commissioners, and the Coleraine Future Town Fund.

They discussed how Sea2it is tackling the challenge of marine plastic pollution, transforming a negative into a positive through volunteering, training, and community engagement. Richard and HRH also spoke about the Wetwheels Foundation – of which The Princess Royal is Patron – and the exciting ongoing project to base an accessible Wetwheels boat on the River Bann, once suitable onshore facilities are developed.

Richard also extended an invitation to the Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, and Minister Gordon Lyons MLA to visit Coleraine Harbour and explore how a Wetwheels project for Northern Ireland could be realised.

Reflecting on the day, Richard described it as “a truly memorable occasion celebrating our voluntary community.”

At Coleraine Harbour, we continue to build the case for wheelchair-accessible facilities on the River Bann through the Town Fund, ensuring our community – and visitors to our harbour – can enjoy inclusive access to the water for generations to come.
